More Information about Diamond Engagement Rings........

The tradition of giving and wearing an engagement ring has been around for centuries and originally evolved as a financial commitment on the groom's part to his bride-to-be and her family. Thankfully it also has a romantic lineage and is worn on the fourth finger of the left hand because it was once believed that the 'Vein of Love' ran from this finger straight to the heart.

Diamonds were not used in engagement rings though until much later, towards the 15th Century, and were only affordable to the elite. However, after a large diamond deposits were discovered in South Africa in the late 1800s, the prices began to come down making diamond engagement rings increasingly accessible to everyone.

Choosing Between the Many Engagement Rings Designs

When conducting your engagement ring search it is worth bearing in mind the factors that go into creating contemporary engagement rings. It is imperative to find something that not only looks fabulous but which reflects the wearer's individuality. Several different variables affect the appearance and character from the metal to the engagement ring setting to the cut of the diamond. If you are looking for a more unique engagement ring then shaped diamond engagement rings with a marquise or pear cut offer something a little less mainstream. Read on to find out more.

Round Engagement Rings

Round single stone engagement rings continue to be the most popular style. This is because they are particularly striking as the brilliant round cut achieves the maximum amount of sparkle and fire from a diamond. It is actually shaped like a cone with the circular part facing outwards. The brilliant diamond engagement rings came into existence after diamond cutter Marcel Tolkowsky published his findings for the ideal configuration for facet placement in his 1919 book "Diamond Design".

Emerald Cut Engagement Rings

Originally popular during the Art Deco period, stars such as Beyonce have made this rectangular style popular again with their own emerald cut diamond solitaire engagement ring. It is part of the step category of cuts, which means it has flat, broad facets which rise up like steps. The look is incredibly elegant but emerald cut diamond engagement rings do not produce as much fire and brilliance as other rings. Instead they generate sudden long flashes of light off of their wide, open surfaces.

Marquise Cut Engagement Rings

If you choose to go with a marquise diamond engagement ring then you are in good company. Not only does Hollywood star Catherina Zeta Jones own a 10 carat marquise engagement ring, but the shape was originally created for royalty. In the 17th century jewellers to King Louis XIV were asked to create a diamond to replicate the smile of the Marquise de Pompadour. It is part of the modified brilliant category of cuts which means it exudes masses of fire and brilliance. The sleek shape of marquise engagement rings also means that they are very flattering to wear and elongate the finger to create a longer, more elegant line. The stone can be set at different angles however to form thoroughly unique diamond engagement rings.

Pear Shaped Engagement Rings

The pear engagement ring was made possible by Flemish polisher Lodewyk van Berquem who created the diamond cut in 1458. By combining two of his inventions - the scaif, a diamond polishing wheel, and facet arranging with the use of absolute symmetry - the cut was born. It gives off significant scintillation as part of the modified brilliant category of cuts and was used to create the Taylor-Burton diamond, a 69.42 carat pear shaped diamond given to Elizabeth Taylor as an engagement present. The most famous pear cut diamond though is the Cullinan I or Star of Africa, the 520.02 carat weight of which graces the sceptre of the King of England. A pear cut diamond engagement ring is also worn by modern beauty Anna Kournikova.

Princess Cut Engagement Rings

A princess cut diamond solitaire engagement ring is a fairly recent phenomenon, only created in 1979 by Ygal Perlman, Betzalel Ambar and Israel Itzkowitz. Princess engagement rings are second only in popularity to the round engagement rings. Previously square cut diamond engagement rings would have been formed from the emerald or Asscher cut, although forerunners to the princess diamond engagement ring included the barion cut (created by Basil Watermeyer) and the profile cut. They could not extol as much sparkle from the diamond as the princess cut however and were restricted to shallower stones. For an arrangement ring with square setting, a princess cut diamond cannot be beaten on sheer brilliance and is why stars such as Penny Lancaster have their own princess cut engagement ring.
